About Dorothy May Black

Dorothy Black grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan. After graduating from the University of British Columbia, she married and as her family of three grew up, gradually became involved with painting. She moved to Newfoundland in 1965, to London, Ontario in 1980, to Fort Frances in 1985, and finally to Westport, Ontario.

Books and nature were Dorothy Black’s teachers. Primarily a watercolourist, she also painted in oils and experimented with mixed media. Flowers, a favourite subject, were painted from fresh specimens. Old buildings and their parts are another interest, as are landscapes and still-life arrangements.
